A bidet spray, also called a hand bidet spray or toilet spray, is one of the most familiar bathroom fittings in Singapore. In an HDB flat, BTO unit or condo you will usually find a small hand-held spray mounted beside the toilet rather than a separate bidet fixture.

If you are renovating your bathroom, replacing an old bidet spray, or upgrading your toilet during an HDB Home Improvement Programme (HIP), choosing the right spray is mostly about comfort, control, durability and the way it connects to your existing water supply.

What is a bidet spray?

A bidet spray is a small hand-held water spray connected to a flexible hose and mounted beside the toilet. Unlike a separate bidet fixture found in some overseas bathrooms, the Singapore bathroom typically uses a hand spray positioned next to the toilet. It can be used for personal hygiene and for rinsing around the toilet area.

Its compact size makes it especially practical in Singapore homes, where bathroom space can be limited. This includes smaller HDB and BTO bathrooms, as well as condo bathrooms where homeowners want to keep the toilet area uncluttered. HDB itself recognises the hand bidet spray as a bathroom fitting: under the EASE improvements associated with HIP, a bidet spray can be installed beside the pedestal pan or at a feasible location assessed by HDB.

Types and finishes of a bidet spray

The spray head, hose and wall holder all affect how the fitting feels and performs.

Spray head material

ABS plastic: lightweight and available in various colours and finishes, a practical choice if you want a simple, lightweight hand spray.

Material and finish are separate considerations. A spray can have an ABS body with a chrome-type finish, for example, so check the actual product construction rather than judging from appearance alone.

The hose

The hose lets you move the spray comfortably while using it. Common choices include flexible metal or stainless steel hoses, as well as other flexible constructions. Our sprays come complete with a hose and wall holder. A hose that feels flexible but well made is preferable to one that feels stiff, flimsy or difficult to handle.

The wall holder or bracket

The holder keeps the spray off the bathroom floor when it is not in use. Choose one that keeps the spray at a comfortable height and within easy reach of the toilet. The position matters especially in a compact HDB or BTO bathroom. If you are renovating, decide where the holder should go before the final wall finishing is completed.

Water connection: angle valve or two-way valve

A hand bidet spray normally connects to the existing water supply beside the toilet. Depending on your plumbing, the connection may use an angle valve or a two-way valve to feed both the toilet and the bidet spray. Most Singapore installations use the cold-water supply. Warm-water arrangements are possible, but they are not the normal setup for a simple hand bidet spray and need a suitable hot-water connection. Spray strength and control

A good bidet spray gives you control rather than simply producing a strong jet. Most hand sprays use a trigger on the handle: press to start the flow, release to stop. Look for a trigger that is comfortable to operate and gives reasonable control over spray strength.

Very high pressure is not necessarily better. You want enough pressure for effective rinsing without making the spray uncomfortable to use. The valve arrangement also matters, because it affects how easily you can control or isolate the water. If the existing valve is old, stiff or unsuitable, a plumber can advise whether it should be replaced during the renovation.

Hygiene and maintenance

A bidet spray meets water every day, so simple maintenance keeps it working well.

• Rinse and wipe the spray head to clear any residue around the nozzle.
• Watch for limescale. Mineral deposits can build up around the openings over time. If the flow becomes uneven, clean the nozzle following the manufacturer's instructions.
• Check the hose. The flexible hose is a wear item: look out for cracks, corrosion, leaks around the connections, or a hose that has become stiff. If it is worn, replacing it is more sensible than continuing with a damaged hose.

Do not ignore a small leak. A deteriorating hose can eventually develop a larger leak, especially if it is left under constant water pressure.

Installation in a Singapore bathroom

For a straightforward replacement, a bidet spray can often be fitted to the existing water connection beside the toilet. However, do not assume every bathroom has the same valve arrangement: older HDB flats may have different plumbing fittings from a recently renovated BTO or condo bathroom. If the existing angle valve, connection or pipework is unsuitable, a plumber can check the setup and make the necessary changes.

Singapore's plumbing rules also require backflow protection for hand bidet sprays connected to a flexible hose beside a water closet, so the installation should use the appropriate fittings and be carried out by a suitably qualified plumber where required.

Bidet spray and HDB HIP upgrades

Bidet sprays are especially relevant to older HDB homes. During an HDB HIP upgrade, homeowners may choose improvements that make the bathroom easier and more comfortable to use. HDB currently lists a bidet spray next to the pedestal pan as an EASE improvement, with up to two pieces available under the programme.

HDB's HIP information explains that the standard bidet spray is installed beside the pedestal pan or at a feasible location assessed by HDB. If you want a different design from the standard one, HDB states that a different bidet spray can be purchased separately and arranged for installation under a private arrangement with the HIP contractor. For homeowners carrying out their own renovation, the same principle applies: check the water connection and position before choosing the fitting.

Pairing a bidet spray with a new toilet bowl

If you are replacing your toilet at the same time, it is worth choosing the bidet spray and toilet together. Consider where the toilet bowl will sit, where the water connection is, whether there is enough room beside the bowl for the spray, where the wall holder should go, and whether the finish matches the toilet and other fittings.

This is particularly useful when replacing an old toilet bowl in an HDB bathroom, so the toilet, bidet spray and water connection work together rather than being treated as separate purchases.
